18 And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is.
19 May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.

Last week we looked at Paul’s plea for Gods powerful strengthening in the inner man and for Christ presence in them (Ephes 3: 16-17). This week we will see how Paul builds upon his previous request by praying that, as his readers are strengthened by Gods Spirit and indwelt by Christ, they might be empowered to grasp with all the saints what is the breadth and length and depth and height, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge (Ephes 3:18-19a).

The love of Christ seemed to Paul so astonishing and so infinite that the apostle ran out of images with which to express it! In fact, Paul prays in these verses that the Ephesians would know something that is quite beyond knowledge! He resorts to spatial imagery to convey the inexpressible and incomprehensible nature of the love of Christ. Its breadth, length, height, and depth are immeasurable. His love extends boundlessly in every direction, like an infinite universe whose end can never be reached. Paul prays that the believers would grow deeper in their knowledge of God, whose greatness can never be fully grasped, whose love can never be fully understood, and whose glory can never be fully experienced. Paul’s prayer climaxes with his desire that they would be filled to God’s own fullness i.e. that we would overflow with God’s strength, love, and knowledge (Ephes 3:18-19b)

Lord give us the power to grasp and to appreciate just how great the love of Christ is for us.
Lord give us the power to experience your love in our lives.
Lord give us your power and fill us with your presence.
